Sneaker Releases 2023: Personal Favorites

Although this year hasn’t been as exciting as previous years for sneakers, there have still been some notable releases worth talking about. Sneakers will always be subjective. However, certain drops are more popular and well-known amongst countless sneaker enthusiasts for various reasons. A quick sneaker releases review for the year will consist of personal favorites as this list doesn’t represent all of the top drops in 2023.

A Ma Maniére x Jordan Air Ship PE SP

A classic model paired with a brand for the people. Jordan Brand didn’t disappoint with this release. After a recent restock, the Jordan Air Ships were accessible to virtually everyone who put did their their due diligence and necessary footwork/research.

The materials feel better than usual. The aged look compliments the silhouette effortlessly. Anyone who appreciates history and social activism will quickly realize the importance of this release. One of the main reasons makes my personal releases review is because of the impact of this pair.

Nike Air Ships aren’t typically well-known amongst the masses. Even people outside of the sneaker world can pick out popular Jordans, but many aren’t as familiar with the Air Ships. Sneaker enthusiasts appreciate the significance of the pair that paved the way for the iconic Air Jordan 1.

Sneaker releases 2023: Air Ship A Ma Maniere

The subtle yet recognizable A Ma Maniere branding on the heel collar effortlessly tops off this pair. Over-branding often makes or breaks a pair of sneakers; AMM and Jordan made sure to stay true to the Air Ship’s roots while adding a unique touch. These sneakers are extremely versatile as you can never go wrong with the classic black and white combo. JB and AMM did their thing yet again.

Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 Pine Green

Although Jordan has been pumping out 4s like crazy over the past few years, the collabs either stand out or fall in line with general releases. Any Nike SB brings back tons of nostalgia for countless sneakerheads all around the world.

The colorway is simple yet effective at drawing eyes to the sneakers. Green and white paired with hints of gray give this collab a timeless look. The gum bottom and red Jumpman logo add complementary touches that pair well with pine green.

Any Jordan with a Nike backtab almost instantly has more hype than those with the Jumpman. A Nike SB logo increases the amount attention and reverence even more. The SB Jordan 4s make countless SOTY lists for obvious reasons. Anyone that can get their hands on these seems to be rarely disappointed.

Air Jordan 1 UNC Toe

Although this pair isn’t part of my personal collection, it still remains one of my favorite sneaker releases of 2023. A classic silhouette paired with a classic color blocking scheme paired with UNC blue leaves little room for any type of complaint or criticism.

If the UNC Toes released three to four years ago, they would easily be going for well over $400 on the resale market.

Sneaker releases 2023- Jordan 1 UNC Toe

Now, sneakers in general don’t sell for as much as they used to after initial releases. The sneaker world is definitely in favor of buyers currently. Anyone who likes blue Jordans shouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on the UNC Toe 1s.

The white and black color blocking makes a sneaker pop more than other two tone colorways. If the UNC Toes were produced in a way similar to the Pollen 1s, the colors wouldn’t nearly stand out as much. A contrast of black and white paired with another color allows the sneaker to instantly become more eye-catching and visually appealing.

Action Bronson x New Balance 990v6 ‘Baklava’

New Balance’s collab game has been killing it over the past few years. Kith and Aime Leon Dore have been undoubtedly adding a significant boost to the American footwear and apparel brand’s image and social status.

NB is valid amongst virtually all sneaker enthusiasts around the world especially in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other major European nations such as France and Spain. Collabs with cultural icons like Action Bronson only add positivity and longevity to the label’s solidified reputation.

Loud collaborations often do extremely well or flunk miserably. Bronson’s personal style and flair is represented well through his 990v6 collab. A variety of colors that are not commonly paired together makes this sneaker a unique touch to a classic model.

Paired with an all-black fit, the Baklava 990v6 will slap harder than Will Smith. Sometimes sneakerheads need that extra push to branch out and buy loud sneakers they would normally not even consider in the first place.

Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low Olive

Is there any respectable top sneaker list over the last five years that doesn’t include at least one if not multiple Travis Scott collabs?

Despite his Astroworld controversy, the Houston-based rapper still remains one of the hottest names in the sneaker collab world. Any neutral colorway with Cactus Jack will be an instant hit. Jordan Brand shows no signs of slowing down with Scott anytime soon.

Sneaker releases 2023: Travis Scott Jordan 1 Low Olive

Travis Scott’s influence is heard worldwide. Even sneaker enthusiasts who don’t care for his music still flock to get their hands on his sneakers.

Nike and T Scott know what the people like and will continue to produce bangers as long as they have a working partnership. Until the duo’s partnership comes to an end, they will stay on top in the collab game. Very few collaborations have as much influence and hype as the Travis Scott Nike/Jordan pair.

Sneaker Releases 2023

At the end of every year, Nike and Jordan come out on top. New Balance has been making a noticeable push. Adidas has slowed down considerably since dropping the Yeezy line. The Oregon-based powerhouse consistently produces most of the best sneakers year in and year out.

Obviously, I am personally biased towards Nike and Jordan. However, New Balance has caught my eye and has become more hip over the past few years. Adidas hasn’t been a major part of my personal collection even when Yeezy was at its peak. I have been and will be a huge Nike/Jordan fan for the foreseeable future.

Will Nike continue its unmatched run every year or will another sneaker label give the giant a run for its money? Leave some of your favorite sneaker releases of 2023 in the comments below.

NB 550 x ALD Close Up

NB 550 x Aime Leon Doré Review

Aime Leon Doré x New Balance 550 Purple

New Hype, Same Label

Anybody who is somewhat interested in sneakers knows how popular New Balance (NB) has been over the past few years. Especially due to collaborations with various labels and designers, the brand founded in Boston has seen an increase in demand for a majority of its models. Only five years ago someone wearing New Balances would have been viewed as an outsider in the sneaker community; Jordans and Adidas still run the game, but NB has proved itself to be a strong competitor who takes pride in comfort and craftsmanship. The NB 550 has seen an exorbitant rise in popularity over the past few years.

The New Balance 550s have gained tons of attention since they have been relaunched in 2020. The model initially released out in 1989 when low-top basketball sneakers were not a common sight in the late ’80s. Thanks to Teddy Santis, the founder of the New York based fashion and lifestyle brand Aimé Leon Dore (ALD), the New Balance 550 saw an overdue revival and tons of hype surrounding the silhouette. Santis helped kickstart the 550 craze in September 2020 when he decided to team up with New Balance and bring the model out of the vault. Since then, the NB 550 has proved to be a retro sneaker that has been part of the “dad shoe” trend over the past few years. There are no signs of slowing down for the New Balance 550 anytime soon.

Recent NB x ALD Collabs

The recent pack of the Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 550 comes in three colorways- brown, olive, and purple. All three have their own unique colors, but the purple stood out the most to me personally. The recent batch of 550s all sport the same color blocking as the first group that was released in 2020. Teddy Santis knows how to execute a sneaker collab to near perfection. There are not many aspects you can nitpick about his work with New Balance.

Overall, the ALD x NB 550 is a timeless retro sneaker that is extremely versatile and wearable. From basketball shorts to cargos pants to chinos and joggers, the 550 can be worn with a wide variety of clothing. The “aged” midsole is a perfect shade of cream; the aged trend can be a hit or miss, but the look on the NB 550 is a no brainer. The model already flaunts vintage looks, so the cream midsole is a perfect touch to a classic sneaker

New Balance is in a weight class with the big boys now. Obviously Nike and Jordan have been the frontrunner for quite some time with no signs of slowing down. However, New Balance has given Adidas a run for their money. Collaborations as of lately have propelled NB into one of the most popular sneaker brands over the last few years. Made in USA shoes have been a staple of New Balance for quite some time. They typically have better quality control and higher standards than other footwear giants who focus more on mass production which causes a considerable drop-off in quality. Especially in the ALD x New Balance 550, the quality is well worth the retail price.

Proven Quality

NB 550
NB 550

The leather on the ALD 550s feels sturdy and is of solid quality overall. This particular pair has great attention to detail and excellent quality control; the simplicity makes the sneakers a unique and often wearable pair. The purple is a very dark shade which allows for a high wearability. Cream and off-white compliment each other to near perfection. A simple yet distinctive pair like the ALD x NB 550 brings a classic look back with a modern twist.

The shade of purple is dark enough to pair well with a variety of colors, but is not too bright either. ALD’s logo on the insole adds a nice touch to the subtle aspects of this pair. Cream and purple on the soles makes for a unique combo that compliment the midsole and upper hues.

Distinct logos are no stranger to the NB x ALD 550 collab. Aimé Leon Dore’s apple/New York logo stands out and represents quality goods. Anyone who pays attention to the New York based label knows their clothing is constructed with care and high caliber materials. ALD takes pride in being simple yet unique; this particular pair displays the classic logo that is recognizable at first sight.

New Balance x Aimé Leon Dore

Collabs with extra features separate from the sneakers stand out compared to those that don’t. Extra laces come in cream and purple for this particular pair. Both would compliment the shoes well, but the cream or white would look best for a classic look.

Basketball is a common motif in Aimé Leon Dore’s collections, photos, logos, and brand inspiration. New Balance collaborated with Santis of ALD on a hoop-themed collection of apparel, bags, and accessories. The “All-City Sonny League” collection seeks to bring people together; the main expression for the set is “International Friendship Through Basketball.” Teddy Santis found his own lane to bring basketball and retro shoes and apparel together in a seamless fashion. He continues to hone in and focus on basketball in his ties with New Balance.

The box would be the only negative aspect in the ALD NB 550 partnership. Although the Aimé Leon Dore spell out adds a unique touch to the typical New Balance box, the overall quality is subpar to say the least. The box is extremely flimsy and feels cheap. New Balance stayed true to the original 550s with a vintage look and feel.

The New Balance basketball-apple-caterpillar logo gives the tongue a classic and contemporary addition. ALD logos are not lacking on the 550 collab. Teddy Santis’s branding stands out with the basketball-apple printed on one insole and on the back tab as well. He makes sure to stay true to New York, keeping the recognized logo pure and noticeable.

Creative Connection

Teddy Santis is a monumental figure in New Balance’s revival of the 550. The two forces teamed up to bring some hype to relaunch the model before releasing more GR pairs that anyone can get their hands on. The ALD raffle for the recent brown, olive, and purple NB 550s was handled extremely well; the site was simple to enter on and allowed individuals to enter for all three colorways to increase their chances of securing a pair. Anyone who was not selected for the raffle got an opportunity to preorder the colorways they missed out on the first time.

Many people have mixed feelings about preorders. Although the preorders will not ship until Spring 2023, Aimé Leon Dore made sure their supporters would be taken care of. For anyone who wanted a pair of ALD 550s and did not care about resell prices or hyping “dying down,” the raffle and preorder gave both NB and ALD fans a deserving chance to secure a pair for retail price.

New Balance has stepped up to the plate over the recent years. Collabs with Aimé Leon Dore, Joe Fresh Goods, and JJJJound have proved to come with high expectations, quality materials, and exceptional execution.

ALD x NB 550 On Feet

Outlook for Aimé Leon Dore

The future between ALD and New Balance looks promising. Both labels clearly have chemistry together; they will have more models and collections to work on and explore more possibilities for future collaborations. Teddy Santis prides himself on quality rather than quantity. New Balance has been moving in the same direction especially when they manufacture some sneakers in the States. Obviously, they could mass-produce far more pairs overseas with inferior materials. New Balance and ALD are a near perfect fit as they would rather look for higher quality pieces even if profits slightly decrease.

Santis brings an original flare to streetwear and sneakers. He knows how to connect with the youth and continues to put out quality pieces that resonate with many people. Basketball brings people together no matter how they relate to it; Santis has been able to use a few essential themes to lead the way for Aimé Leon Dore. Brands like New Balance are working with young, up and coming, and relatable creatives and artists now more than ever in the history of the Boston-based brand.

Overall, New Balance and Aimé Leon Dore have an established connection with no signs of slowing down. Future apparel collections and more sneakers will continue to showcase the creative focus of each contributor. Both parties will have the room to stay true to their respective brands while experimenting with subtle yet appealing changes. Teddy Santis is not taking his foot off the pedal with his creative control in collaboration with New Balance.

Be Water, My Friend Review

Shannon Lee has been an instrumental piece in preserving and continuing her father’s ideals and impact still felt around the world. She wrote Be Water, My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee to show how her late father thought on a regular basis and how he approached life. This book talks directly to the reader rather than simply trying to explain certain events and concepts. Shannon Lee used her father’s teachings to express how he saw the world around him. She stresses how the reader should focus on their world while taking away valuable lessons from Bruce Lee’s remarkable life.

Since being published in 2020, Be Water, My Friend has been influential towards various individuals who are interested in martial arts and philosophy. Many of Bruce Lee’s philosophies have been especially relevant now in a world full of change. He was without a doubt ahead of his time and would have been an extremely influential figure in today’s society. Lee’s teachings provided clarity for numerous individuals who never knew how powerful the mind could truly be.

Bruce Lee is a legend that will never be forgotten. He was a pioneer who bridged the gap between Chinese martial arts and cinema with its American counterparts. Lee became a global icon of being fierce, yet calm and poised. Anyone who has seen Enter the Dragon (1973) knows how powerful Bruce Lee’s presence truly was. He knew he was a badass who could finish his opponents in an agile way. He relied on technique and finesse rather than brute force. Thankfully, Bruce Lee’s legacy will live on for numerous generations.

Be Water, My Friend

Formless Like Water

Bruce Lee focused on the importance of water and how it can be a metaphor for essential principles in everyday life. He stressed the significance of nature around us and how “Like flowing water, life is perpetual movement” (Lee 24). Life is never the same as it was yesterday; everyday brings new challenges and obstacles that we have no idea about. Although humans cannot see into the future, one thing we know for certain is how life will never be stagnant. Change requires flexibility and pliability like water. We have to adapt to our surroundings in order to flow with life’s currents.

“Like flowing water, life is perpetual movement.” -Bruce Lee

Perception is Reality

Bruce Lee emphasized the significance of learning from the world around you. Experience is without a doubt one of the best teachers anyone can have in life. Setbacks in life are prevalent; how we react to them is often more important than the act of failing itself. Lee explained how defeat does not make someone a failure.

“We are always in a process of becoming and nothing is fixed. Have no rigid system in you, and you’ll be flexible to change with the ever changing. Open yourself and flow, my friend. Flow in the total openness of the living moment. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo.”

(Lee 156-7)

The importance of perception and the state of mind are both essential recurring themes in Be Water, My Friend. Lee brought up the fact that perception truly is reality: “You are the greater and the interpreter your life in every moment. Things have meaning to you because you give them that meaning—no one else” (Lee 140). Nobody can live a fulfilling life for you. A healthy state of mind goes hand in hand with clear perception. Powerful abilities come from the mind before anything else. The way someone thinks brings more power than any outside force ever will.

Self Worth

Be Water, My Friend stresses the importance of being your authentic self. Bruce Lee’s philosophies can be applied to millions of people’s lives. He wanted to help others by promoting self-confidence. Lee’s values are timeless and can teach many people more about life than studying a philosophy textbook.

Lee’s cognitive ability was often overshadowed by his martial arts talent, but he became a martial arts legend due to his intellectual prowess. Shannon Lee demonstrated the fact that her father knew how being true to yourself opens endless opportunities, “Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Start from the very root of your being which is ‘how can I be me?'” (Lee 200).

When failure is looking at us directly, it is often hard to see the lesson at the moment. However, if we keep our head up and keep moving on, we have the ability to learn from defeat in countless ways. Nobody is a failure until they deem themselves one. Any lasting and meaningful success will not come without some form of failure beforehand.

“Defeat is a state of mind; no one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and its punishment is but an urge for me to exert greater effort to achieve my goal. Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path leading to success and truth.”

Lee 136

We often limit ourselves before even making an attempt at confronting something that might scare us. A healthy state of mind can lead to a world of endless possibilities. The opposite is essential to understand as well. If we have limiting thoughts, our potential to achieve great things will be restricted too.

Lee’s Transformation: Be Water

Be Water

One of the most important aspects of the book is how Bruce Lee transformed himself after deeming himself too rigid and traditional. Lee established his own martial arts school called the Jun Fan Guy Fu Institutes in Seattle, Washington and Oakland, California. In 1964, the San Francisco Chinatown community was extremely upset with Lee’s rebellious ways after he opened up he is second school in Oakland. They felt he was disrespecting their ways and challenged him to a match to determine the outcome of Lee’s future in teaching martial arts. If he won, he would be able to continue teaching his ways as usual, but if he lost, he would have to quit his teaching. Obviously, Bruce Lee would not back down from this challenge.

The match took place in November 1964 at Bruce Lee’s school in Oakland. The opposition was a fighter who was randomly selected and less skilled than Lee. Since he had the fight on his home turf, he elected for no official rules during the match. Traditional ways were nowhere to be found in the quarrel. Lee chased his opponent around until he finally pinned the man down on his back, yelling repeatedly in Cantonese, “Do you give up?!” until the opponent gave in and ended the match. Lee was nowhere near satisfied, even though he won the fight without a doubt. He threw any sort of technique out the window in order to win and quickly understood how important it was to become more flexible.

This particular fight in Lee’s career proved to be a significant moment of truth. He realized his traditional and rigid techniques would not get him very far in life. Bruce Lee knew his limited martial arts methodology must be put to rest. He had a friend create him a mini tombstone which read: “In memory of a once fluid man crammed and distorted by the classical mess” (Lee 60). Shannon Lee explained how this symbolized a turning point in her father’s life.

He had to alter his orthodox ways to get back to his free-flowing approach. She added, “It was a reminder to move forward like flowing water” (Lee 60). Without the fight and the symbolic mini-tombstone, Bruce Lee most likely would not have been as widely known as he is today. His ability to adapt and force himself to become more fluid proved to be invaluable for his entire life.

Be Water: The Way of the Intercepting Fist

Lee brought a new approach to his environment and adapted it according to his ideals and beliefs. He did not confine himself to traditional martial arts standards. His expression of martial arts reflected how he viewed the world around him. Jeet Kune Do, which translates to “The Way of the Intercepting Fist,” is one of Bruce Lee’s most impactful works of art. Lee did not like to call it a style of martial arts. He viewed it as an expression and philosophy that conveys his principles in a nonverbal manner. He often questioned traditional practices of kung fu. Lee believed a person had to be prepared for an opponent’s next move rather than already having a premeditated and rigid approach. Being adaptable to an opponent leaves room for more creativity and fluidity. Jeet Kune Do stresses the importance of balancing give and take in martial arts.

Never Forgotten

The legend of Bruce Lee lives on today and will for the foreseeable future. Even today, martial arts and social justice exude Lee’s influence. Lee always sought to bring awareness of supporting minority groups, especially Asian Americans and African Americans. Bruce Lee dealt with racism during his cinematic career in Hollywood. Due to this, he did not want Asian Americans to be in roles with a negative connotation. He used his experience to become an ally to other minorities who were subject to oppression. Everyone can learn from Lee by supporting those who do not have a heard voice and judging an individual by their character rather than how they look.

Bruce “Little Dragon” Lee became a martial arts icon as he continued to teach and promote his own practice. He did not back down from any opponent and definitely did not limit his abilities and teachings to a strict set of rules. Lee stressed the importance of a flexible approach in martial arts and life throughout his respected philosophies.

Unfortunately, he was not able to see the official release of one of his greatest accomplishments. On July 20, 1973, Bruce Lee passed away at the young age of 32 in Hong Kong due to swelling of the brain. The premier of Enter the Dragon was on August 19, almost exactly a month after Lee’s tragic death. May we never fail to forget the impact Bruce Lee continues to have on the martial arts community, the Chinese and Chinese-American communities, and countless supporters around the world who admire his work and philosophy.
