Sneakers and Consumerism: Complex Affairs

Sneakers and consumerism bring about endless complexities. Both are complicated independently. However, when the two are tied together, they bring even more complex issues. Purchasing sneakers is nowhere near as simple as it used to be in the recent and distant past.

Sneaker Buying Habits

Many sneaker enthusiasts often reminisce about the days of being able to pull up to their local sneaker store on a release day and buying a pair in their size with ease. Now, tons of footwork and online work is necessary just to have a chance of buying the wanted sneakers. The online world has taken over the sneaker community. It has become rare to see retailers advertise first-come-first-serve releases. At the end of the day, many businesses don’t want to deal with the headaches of people acting a fool waiting hours in line and potentially causing commotion to the local community.

Footwear are usually considered a basic necessity of life in most countries around the world. In Western culture, virtually everyone has a pair of sneakers even if they don’t consider themselves a “sneakerhead.” The sneaker market has seen exponential growth over the past five or so years.

Ultimately, countless retailers and boutiques have drastically altered their releases to deal with less hassle and drama. Many brands don’t seem to care who gets their hands on pairs. As long as they can clear out stock efficiently, something must be working.

Online shopping has taken over the sneaker world with no signs of slowing down.

Mass Consumerism

People all over the United States buy goods just to buy them. A new table needs a new book which needs a new bookshelf which needs a new lamp. Many stores are physically set up to get customers to buy more than they originally expected. Someone can go into a store with a list of three items and come out with well over ten due to unintentional buying habits.

Social media often emphasizes that “more is better.” However, having more sneakers isn’t always the answer due to countless reasons. First, you can only wear one pair at a time. Buying more shoes brings along more maintenance, storage, and time needed to decide which pair to wear. Also, buying more sneakers isn’t always the most financially sound decision.

Sneakers and consumerism- hyped sneakers

The concept of delayed gratification comes with being financially responsible. Sometimes you have to put off a new sneaker purchase due to more important matters (rent/mortgage, bills, repairs, food, etc.)

Another important reason why buying more sneakers aren’t always a smart decision is because of the fact that many sneaker enthusiasts get caught up and buy pairs with no objective in mind. “Mindless purchases” have become a major issue in the sneaker world. Peer pressure and feeling the need to “keep up” will have someone buy sneakers they don’t really want or need.

Sneakers and Consumerism: Looking to the Future

Mass consumerism is no stranger to the sneaker world as well. Sneaker enthusiasts are often looking for their next purchase before they even make a purchase now. Brands push out endless pairs of sneakers for customers to buy and quickly get bored of. After one release, countless consumers are looking to the next with no signs of looking back.

The majority of sneaker buying will be done mostly online for the foreseeable future. Every now and then retailers will do in-person raffles or first-come-first-serve releases, but online releases will continue to the the frontrunner.

Consumers all around the sneaker world seek to keep up with news and trends on a daily basis. The sneaker community is extremely trend-driven and looks to bring back countless of the same customers on a continuous basis.

Sneakers and consumerism will have a complex relationship. The point of being a sneaker enthusiast is to buy sneakers you like. However, mass consumerism and even over-consumerism slowly creep up on countless individuals. The sneaker world will undergo changes that will pave the way for the role of consumerism in the near and distant future.

New Sneaker Sensation

Very few feelings in the world come close to trying on a new pair of sneakers for the first time. When a long-awaited pair finally comes in, the excitement is at its peak. That new shoe smell is unmatched. That new sneaker sensation is untouchable.

Everyone doesn’t get the hype of sneakers, but almost everyone can appreciate a fresh pair of shoes that makes walking around a little more enjoyable.

New Sneaker Rotation

Sneaker enthusiasts all around the world typically pride themselves on having some sort of rotation. They can vary depending on the season and functionality; rotations allow for a new sneaker to be broken in gradually. Some like to beat up their pairs as soon as possible. At the end of the day, sneaker wearing habits are all personal preference.

Sneaker rotations literally come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They allow for individualization and a healthy way to express oneself creatively.

Rotations are good for sneakers too. Wearing the same pair day in and day out doesn’t leave much possibility for longevity, even if the wearer takes care of them effortlessly. Sneaker rotations give sneakers a break before the next wear. Do you think sneakerheads with hundreds of pairs wear the same sneakers everyday?

Someone doesn’t have to own a huge collection to start a trustworthy rotation. Rotations can be created with as little as two or three pairs up to a week’s worth of sneakers and in some cases even more. A new sneaker often gets inserted into a pre-existing rotation rather effortlessly. People want to look fresh and feel good while taking care of their sneakers.

Versatility: Options and Functionality

Sneakers come in almost every shape and size imaginable. The present state of the sneaker world is ever-changing. New models, silhouettes, colorways, and sneaker brands are coming out on a regular basis. Anyone can switch up their collection and give themselves more options almost instantly.

Versatility is key to any solid rotation. One pair of sneakers cannot function effectively for every purpose and situation. Rotations should include shoes of all sorts- comfortable, fashionable, durable, and eye-catching sneakers are essential for a respectable rotation. You cannot go wrong with a pair of black and white kicks that pair well with countless fits.

New sneakers that serve multiple purposes often make their way into more rotations than shoes with limited capabilities. You cannot go wrong with a pair of black and white kicks that pair well with countless fits.

The key to having options is creating a rotation full of new and old sneakers. A rotation must be versatile and efficient for multiple situations, not just the sneakers themselves.

New Sneaker Sensation: Bringing Out the Heat

Everyone who loves new sneakers can appreciate certain pairs more than others. People have their own unique taste and style- some pairs stand out more than others for numerous reasons.

At the end of the day, the journey to obtain the more exclusive pairs is often not as simple as picking up a general release.

A new sneaker can make someone feel better about themselves almost instantly. The saying “if you look good, you feel good” will stick around for countless years to come. Ultimately, nothing can replicate the feeling of unboxing a new pair of fresh kicks. Countless sneakerheads still seek that feeling they got when they first got into sneakers.

Recent and Upcoming Sneaker Releases

This year has been rather slow for sneaker releases compared to the past few years. There have been some notable hits, but they appear to be more spread out and more selective than previous years.

Although sneakers are subjective, many sneaker enthusiasts know a hot release when they see one. All types of footwear has loyal fans; sneakers are no different and often have obsessed collectors who constantly stalk the release calendars.

This collab is different as it showcases a throwback look that appears to be more “retro” compared to his previous works with Nike.

Adidas Ultraboost 1.0 “NCAA Pack”

Although the Adidas Ultraboost hype has died down, the model will always be an Adidas staple and one of the most comfortable sneakers on the market. Different variations provide unique looks while staying true to the iconic shape. The Ultraboost has seen tons of colorways from simple black and white to loud vibrant colors and numerous collaborations with highly recognizable branding.

Air Jordan 1 UNC Toe

Not much has to be said about white and black color blocking complemented by virtually every color imaginable. Jordan 1s are still some of the hottest kicks from Jordan Brand especially when they come in UNC colors.

These will be bangers. Real ones will forever appreciate icy blues on a fresh pair of Js. Everyone talks about the leather “quality” on Air Jordans particularly Jordan 1s; all Jordan quality is nowhere near great. Stop complaining about the quality of materials on leather basketball shoes. They are meant to be appreciated as they are, not as designer or high end sneakers.

This pair combines classic colors and a classic model. Not much has to be said about the levels of anticipation for this edition of the Air Jordan 1.

The Air Jordan 1 UNC Toe/University Blue released July 22nd for a retail price of $180 (Men’s).

Adidas Yeezy August 2023 Releases

There’s definitely no shortage of news and headlines involving Kanye West. Only a select number of people can be “cancelled” and come back to stay relevant and virtually hold up the sales of a major footwear and clothing brand. Adidas was known to be taking a potential loss if they completely cut ties with West.

Yeezy Boost 350 v2s, 350 CMPCT v2s, 450s, 700s, Yeezy Slides and Foam Runners will be releasing in August. Kanye’s influence will forever impact Adidas and how they do business. The Chicago-born rapper has given Adidas more time to figure out what they will do post-Ye.

Yeezys still draw tons of attention particularly amongst younger crowds. New colorways are constantly being released and classics are continuously rereleased. Most Yeezys will attract numerous fans for countless reasons. Adidas may think twice about giving up completely on West’s signature line.

Second Half Releases

Although 2023 has been relatively slow in the sneaker world, there are numerous releases to look forward to. Everybody has their own unique style; the releases for the rest of the year will be sure to satisfy countless sneaker enthusiasts in various ways.

Stay tuned for another sneaker releases post in the upcoming future.

Sneaker Art: Cinema and Literature

Like any form of art, sneakers are often represented and complement other art forms rather well. Sneakers are not just shoes. They tell stories. They bring people together. Sneakers go far beyond the physical. Sneaker art is found everywhere around the world.

Cinema and literature highlight countless artistic aspects of the subject at hand. Watching a film tells stories much differently than reading a piece of writing.

Anybody can witness and consume art, but everyone cannot appreciate art on the same level. Sneakers confuse many people yet bring countless individuals together. The world of sneakers is complex especially when other art is intermingled within the subculture.

Sneaker Book Lovers

Reading and sneakers aren’t always thought of together. However, most sneakerheads and sneaker enthusiasts read more than they realize. From all of the information about new releases, to trending stories and hot topics surrounding sneakers, there is never a shortage of sneaker literature.

Sneaker art crosses into many realms. One of the most common is through literature. New sneaker books are popping up every year. Sneaker review books are released on a regular basis. Someone can walk into a sneaker store today and most likely find some type of sneaker book. History, sneaker releases, and brand recognition are all familiar topics.

One particular sneaker book that comes to mind is Sneaker Wars by Barbara Smit. The author highlights the story of how Adidas and Puma were formed. Two German brothers sought vengeance towards each other rather than displaying brotherly love. Without the family feud, the world would not have Adidas or Puma (or even both) to cherish and appreciate. Sneaker books highlighting historical events will never go out of style.

Another type of sneaker books are the ones that highlight the best releases from the past. They may exclusively include sneakers released within a year or could extend over a few years or even a decade. These books let real sneaker lovers to reminisce about the times when sneaker releases carried more weight and meaning. Someone actually had to put in the footwork to even have a chance of getting a hype or exclusive pair of kicks. Now, virtually every release is online and those with bots often get the short end of the stick.

Sneakers in Cinema

Countless sneakers become iconic after making appearances on the big screen. Movies vary across numerous subjects, but some pay meticulous attention to the actor and actresses’ wardrobes.

Some of the most recognizable sneakers have gotten their nicknames directly from the movies they appeared in. Everyone knows about Space Jam. The crossover in 1996 between Looney Tunes and one of the best basketball players of all time became an instant classic. Michael Jordan wore a special edition of the Jordan 11s in the film which later became known as the “Space Jams.”

They are without a doubt one of the most recognizable pair of Jordans in the history of the sneaker line. If Jordan never wore the white, dark concord, and black sneakers, many sneaker enthusiasts most likely would have never seen a pair of Jordan 11s in these colors in the 90s.

Another classic pair popularized through sneaker art in the cinema first came about in the late 90s. Denzel Washington and Ray Allen starred in Spike Lee’s He Got Game. Allen’s partnership with Jordan Brand made sure Air Jordans would be highlighted throughout the movie. Jake Shuttlesworth, played by Washington, dons a pair of white, black, and red Jordan 13s.

This particular pair of Jordans became a fan favorite even to this day. Without the classic basketball movie, the black, red, and white 13s wouldn’t hold as much significance. Jake Shuttlesworth made 13s cool again.

Even sneakers besides Jordans have received indescribable attention through movie appearances. White Men Can’t Jump (1992) arguably made one pair of Nikes iconic overnight. The Nike Air Command Force virtually became a classic because of its cinematic appearance. How many people would be rocking Command Forces if White Men Can’t Jump never released?

Sneaker Art: A Unique Appreciation

Sneakers are a form of art no matter how you look at it. They often represent intangibles much larger than the material aspect.

At the end of the day, art will always be subjective. Sneakers are no stranger to subjectivity; some people may think a particular pair of kicks looks ugly and others may view the same pair as one of their favorites of all time. Even Jordans were considered “ugly” when they first came out. Appreciating sneaker art through cinema and literature allows countless people to fully appreciate the importance and significance of sneakers.

Sneaker art

Artists all over the world are constantly looking to break boundaries and create art that has never been thought of before. The world of sneakers is no different than art such as paintings and drawings. Sneakers will continue to develop and push limits as time goes on.

Sneaker Shopping: The Complex Sensation

Anyone who is interested in sneakers has most likely seen at least one episode of Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping.” The hit series brings celebrities from all walks of life to discuss their personal style and tell stories about sneakers. Complex has continuously put out original sneaker content with the help of Joe La Puma.

Sneaker shopping is not always glamorous. Sometimes the sneakers someone wants aren’t available in-store or they cannot find their size in stock. However, “Sneaker Shopping” glorifies the shopping experience and often attracts individuals outside of the sneaker world.

Fresh and Original Episodes

YouTube has an abundance of content. Many niches are oversaturated and contain recycled content. Especially within sneakers, countless YouTube channels seem to post the same type of videos as their competitors. Success often (but not always) requires a fresh perspective.

Although Complex doesn’t always provide the most original content, they definitely brought a new idea to the sneaker world of YouTube.

“Sneaker Shopping” hosted by Joe La Puma gives viewers a look into the minds of their favorite celebrities. Fast-paced and lively interviews kick off each edition of the show.

Notable Show Guests

Any popular YouTube series will draw in wider audiences with the guest stars ranging from actors, athletes, rappers, and even comedians. Complex knows they would be limiting the show’s potential if they only sought out guests who are already infatuated with sneakers. Some guests who love sneakers may not keep up to date with news and upcoming releases.

Guests often make or break episodes of live shows like “Sneaker Shopping.” The stories told are unique and often light-hearted. Joe La Puma interviews every guest well and asks relevant questions to keep the content engaging.

Some of the most notable guests of Complex’s sneaker series include Quavo, Takeoff (RIP Legend), and Offset, Samuel L. Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, Rick Ross, Neymar, and Druski. The biggest names make appearances on the hit show and provide interesting and unique perspectives.

Joe La Puma has perfected his craft because he lets the guests practically run the show. Viewers are interested in what their favorite celebrity, athlete, or artist is wearing and where they get inspiration from.

Complex makes sure the guests are the highlight of the series. From big spenders to brand enthusiasts, every guest provides a different outlook on their view towards sneakers as a whole.

Sneaker Shopping: Genuine Interactions

Most of the “Sneaker Shopping” episodes showcase genuine interactions between Joe La Puma and the countless guests. Every guest brings intriguing perspectives that are brought to light thanks to Complex.

Shopping experiences aren’t always viewed in a positive light for numerous reasons. However, Complex puts out original content with “Sneaker Shopping” to show more positivity surrounding sneaker shopping.

The need for more positive content on YouTube and the internet in general will never go away. Jealousy and hate is no stranger online especially in the sneaker community. As sneakers have become more mainstream, there are less genuine interactions than back in the day. Many people only look for profit and do not actually care about sneakers, the history behind them or the culture as a whole.

It’s refreshing to see Complex put out content that is original and authentic. Viewers clearly see different guest personalities. It’s interesting and insightful to see how celebrities, athletes, and artists all come to various reasonings behind what they like and what they don’t. Everyone grows up differently which directly influences how they portray themselves in the future.

Joe La Puma does an excellent job of bringing out authentic personalities on “Sneaker Shopping.” He asks intriguing questions about their background, what they like to rock, and how they first got into sneakers. Guests are open to answering questions about sneakers, fashion, and anything in between.

Nobody wants to watch a dry interview without any witty interactions. Complex ensures that guests and Joe La Puma work together to provide a genuine, enjoyable experience for sneaker lovers and countless viewers.

Complex’s Big Ballers

At the end of every episode, the show’s guests shop for sneakers in a secondhand, retail, or resell store. They browse quickly in the episode, but are not shy from spending someone’s rent in a matter of minutes.

Some of the most notable spenders drop huge bills on highly sought after sneakers. At the end of every episode, all sneaker purchases are highlighted in a dramatic fashion. Many viewers would not drop the prices shown on Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping” but can still appreciate how certain sneakers blossom in value over time. Some classics will stay at the top for obvious reasons while some shoes have high resell value strictly due to hype.

In 2019, the YouTube series saw some of its biggest ballers. The history of Complex “Sneaker Shopping” may never see these records broken.

2019 Record Setters

P.J. Tucker, an NBA player more known for his crazy sneaker collection, has one of the highest spending records on the show and the highest of 2019 for strictly sneakers. He dropped just over $33,000 (which is not much to someone in his tax bracket). To see celebrities and athletes pay the price of a brand new car on sneakers baffles many people, even sneakerheads.

Sneaker Shopping

Complex also saw another record set in 2019. The Atlanta-based rapper Future spent almost forty racks on sneakers and designer clothing. Future’s episode was one that countless viewers will never forget.

The top “Sneaker Shopping” spender of 2019 was the rapper Juice WRLD (RIP) with a total just over $42,000. Some of the highest spenders on Complex’s hit series puts things into perspective for many sneaker enthusiasts. Many people wouldn’t think about spending that type of money on sneakers and clothing (both depreciating assets).

However, these high-spending episodes show an foreign lifestyle. Countless viewers will not be able to relate and often would rather watch episodes where guests come across as less alienated and more down to earth.

Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping” brings viewers all around the world with one common objective- buying sneakers. Guests highlight the show and add new flare to every episode. Many YouTube channels have tried to emulate Complex’s hit sensation, but have never found the same type of success. Complex will keep their foot on the accelerator and will continue to look for improvements for “Sneaker Shopping.”

The Entanglement Between Fashion and Commerce

Anyone who is socially aware knows how much fashion and commerce depend on each other in countless aspects. Economic regards are sure to draw tons of attention. Fashion is no stranger to having a complicated relationship with business.

Streetwear and luxury fashion have an even more complicated relationship with commerce than other fashion subcultures. Both even have “toxic” relationships with commerce and consumerism (eerily similar to that couple you know who keeps getting back together after multiple breakups). They can’t seem to stay away from each other even if the relationship may not be mutually beneficial to both parties.

Luxury Fashion and Commerce

Designer and luxury fashion bring along numerous unexplained complexities. Consumers everywhere wait in lines without a problem. Customers often express their “needs” which are typically highly emphasized and over-exaggerated wants. Retail clothing and fashion stores especially in the luxury realm noticeably function differently compared to other retail sectors.

Luxury fashion and shopping go hand in hand. Many customers flaunt their designer-branded bags walking out of the store or around the mall in an attempt to display a higher social status. Most people don’t care about the orange shopping bags or what’s in them. However, even luxury stores are witnessing a decline of in-person shopping as of recently.

In certain boutiques, sales associates may be directly paired to individual customers. The feeling of being followed and/or watched when trying to shop is definitely not an enjoyable experience. Luxury brands are quickly losing the interest of loyal customers. The highest-spending customers are rarely subjected to waiting in line or being followed by a standoffish sales associate. The highest spenders get exclusive access and treatment that keeps them coming back for more.

Fashion and Commerce

Does Luxury Fashion Create Enjoyable Shopping Experiences?

Regulars have noticed a shift in the luxury fashion shopping world. The article, “How Luxury Fashion Killed the Joy of Shopping” by Eugene Rabkin highlights how luxury fashion is rapidly losing once loyal customers. The pandemic has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of in-person shopping especially within stores with regular high foot traffic.

Rabkin goes on to explain how lines seem to constantly go out the door of luxury boutiques in New York. Some people may not worry about waiting to eventually purchase a designer piece, but many do not want to spend their valuable time in line. Countless stores make potential customers wait in line even if the store is not busy at the time. Through “crowd control,” a false sense exclusivity and luxury is often portrayed.

Eugene Rabkin’s article on luxury shopping provides an intriguing outlook for how the relationship between luxury retailers and customers will develop as time goes on. Read more of Rabkin’s work here.

Sincere Sneaker Shopping

Anyone who keeps up with the Complex’s ‘Sneaker Shopping’ knows how glamorous the simple act of buying new sneakers is portrayed on a massive and glorified scale. Most people don’t make a huge deal out of purchasing a new pair of kicks. More often than not, sneakers are ordered online and delivered in person- the wait for the shoes to arrive is highly anticipated. Sneaker shopping in person has been slowly dying down over the past few years.

Many sought-after sneakers are not available for purchase in retail stores around the United States. Resell and secondhand shops typically carry in-demand shoes but with hefty price tags. Consumers don’t want to overpay just for the convenience or experience; many shoppers opt to wait to buy a pair of sneakers for much cheaper online than in-store.

Sneaker shopping is rarely as glamorous as the Complex episodes with Joe La Puma. Most of the time, it is a simple transaction. Other times, employees do not provide the needed assistance they are required to do. Some sneaker boutiques have problems with arrogant and standoffish employees- not too far from the issues associated with luxury boutiques.

The world of sneakers seems to be forever growing. People who do not keep up with sneaker releases may find themselves overwhelmed in a store with hundreds of pairs. Sneaker stores seem to pop up on every corner. Sneaker shopping is more widespread than ever, but is not ideal for most customers.

The Future of Fashion and Commerce

Fashion and commerce bring many complex issues to light. What happened to the days of uninterrupted shopping? When will retail stores understand the warranted concerns of customers?

The future of the complicated relationship between fashion and commerce does not look like it will become any less elaborate anytime soon. Loyal customers and potential customers usually want to be cordial with sales associates. When employees do not show exceptional customer service, the storefronts are typically losing out on potential sales by the minute or even second.

Shopping for clothing may shift to a higher online presence if major corporations don’t start listening to their most loyal customers. Luxury boutiques and sneaker boutiques need to bring in more sales associates who are truly passionate about the industry rather than money hungry employees who use cold tactics to score their next win.

Is Collecting Sneakers Worth It?

Some people collect stamps, others collect trading cards, and some crazy individuals love collecting sneakers. Few people outside of the sneaker world will ever fully understand the craze and hype of sneaker collections.

Select highly sought-after sneakers go for the price of a reliable car, some as much as a brand new car straight from the dealership. The fact that some collectors pay more than some individuals’ annual salaries for sneakers is mind-boggling to countless people, including many sneaker lovers.

Collecting Sneakers: Investments and Returns

The art of collecting brings numerous purposes and reasons along. Some collectors look to obtain massive collections while others look to collect and bank in on certain collectibles. The world of sneakers is no stranger to returns that attract even non-collectors.

Just like the stock market, the sneaker market can be simplified to a classic phrase: “buy low, sell high.” Reselling sneakers is now viewed as an investment option with fantastic yields. Collectors may sell a pair they didn’t intend to keep in the first place or they might sell pairs that have been collecting dust over multiple months or even years.

Is Collecting Sneakers Worth It?

Collectors everywhere hear stories of the longest of long holds. A pair of sneakers released this year may be worth double, triple, or even ten times its current market value five years from now. Selling sneakers can be tricky; one pair that goes up in value tomorrow may crash in just a few weeks. Even people who wear their sneakers now and look to get rid of them in the future may still come up with a substantial profit.

Sneaker reselling is not just something for resellers who are strictly looking for profits. Even the most seasoned collectors resell pairs for various reasons. Reselling one pair to buy another seems to be the norm especially in times of economic distress. Enthusiasts everywhere may look to keep their collections under a certain number; limiting collections gives more value to each pair of sneakers rather than having countless pairs that rarely see the concrete.

Diminishing and Skyrocketing Market Value

Similar to the car market, the sneaker market witnesses rapid asset depreciation. As soon as someone tries on a pair of shoes, the value goes down. As soon as they are worn and collect a spec of dirt, they go down even more.

Collectors may keep multiple pairs at a time brand new or “deadstock” for potential selling or trading purposes in the near or distant future. Although sneakers do not depreciate as dramatically as cars, there is still a major benefit of holding pairs that one may be unsure of wearing.

Major collectors may have multiple pairs to keep on ice in order to potentially get some grails in the future. The sneaker market is constantly fluctuating. One particular pair of sneakers may be worth under its retail price currently but could skyrocket in value in only a few years. The reverse is also true. Sneakers that are extremely high in resell value now may drop significantly after some news comes out or more pairs are released.

Sneaker values all over are forever changing; very few sneakers stay stagnant in the secondary market. Market changes include countless ups and downs with little periods of inactivity. Companies such as StockX and GOAT allow buyers and sellers to track sneaker prices in real time- just like the stock market. The analysis of resell performance on the secondary market will continue to become more widespread as countless individuals are looking for unconventional ways to invest their money.

Collecting Sneakers: Unique Personalized Collections

Sneaker collections speak volumes on how an individual expresses themselves. Some collectors may strictly stick to Jordans, others may be more favorable to other labels like Adidas, New Balance, Reebok, Saucony, or Asics. A collection shows someone’s personal style; sneakers are a form of expression that have evolved over numerous years.

A sneaker collection goes far beyond materialistic aspects. Someone may cherish particular pairs because of the stories tied to them. For example, a pair of sneakers may have been a sought after grail that someone could not afford when they first got into shoes. Another collector may look to keep sneakers in their collection that were obtained through camping out all night or through months of saving up hard earned cash.

People express their styles when they wear sneakers unique to them. At the end of the day, no two collections are exact. Unique collections showcase various colorways, materials, and brands. Stories run abundantly among sneakers; more pairs ultimately leads to more stories that add another layer of distinctiveness.

Know Your (Sneaker) Worth

At the end of a day, collecting sneakers is an expensive yet rewarding lifestyle. If you find yourself to be a nostalgic and/or sentimental person, a collection will hold more weight compared to someone who is more concerned with materialistic aspects. Sneaker collections bring out the best of meaningful memories and stories and help people express themselves in a healthy way.

The worth of a sneaker collection cannot be determined easily. Some may not appreciate your collection as much as you do, but who cares what other people have to say about the shoes you collect and wear?

Know the worth of your collection (both literally- in terms of monetary value for any insurance or trading reasons and figuratively for the greater meaning of all the sneakers). Nobody can ever curate the perfect collection for someone else. A collector knows what will work best in their sneaker collection more than anyone else. Wear and collect what you like. Keep it simple.

The Art of Sneakers

Shoes are meant to be worn and obviously protect feet from countless elements both outside and indoors. Most people look at sneakers as an accessory that do not deserve too much attention. The art of sneakers captures many aspects that would otherwise go unrecognized by most people.

Shoes are worn to get dirty; they are touching grimy surfaces all day and night. However, there are a select number of individuals who appreciate sneakers more than the average person.

Sneaker Construction- Materials and Colorways

Sneakers are unique because they are crafted differently and showcase numerous types of materials. From leather to suede and nubuck to velvet, mohair, canvas, foam, and rubber, the possibilities are virtually endless in the makeup of sneakers around the world. Shoes today feature countless different types of materials that would have never thought of being used in the past.

Materials can make or break a pair of sneakers; nobody wants shoes that are made of the same substance lacks character and usually comfortability.

Now, materials are used to reach optimal performance and comfort. Technology continues to improve vastly with new advancements coming every year.

Colorways are another major improvement among shoes and sneakers specifically. In the past, shoes were bland and did not stand out much at all. Nike pushed boundaries when they released the original Jordan 1 ‘Breds’ in the 1980s. Michael Jordan was banned from wearing them because they did not match the Bulls’ team colors. Now, the NBA sees players wearing crazy colorways that often have nothing to do with their uniforms.

The basketball sneakers in the NBA is representative of the sneaker world in general. It is now uncommon to wear boring shoes- a whole 180 from the ’80s. Sneaker enthusiasts assume things about other people based on the sneakers they wear; someone wearing all black or all white shoes 24/7 might not have much character or flair in their style.

Norms are meant to be broken. Materials and colorways today are continuing to push boundaries and reach new heights for sneakers all over the world. There is not signs of unique sneakers slowing down anytime in the near and even distant future.

Concepts and Stories

Sneakers today are meant to be worn as much as they have in the past. However, there are concepts and stories that make shoes meaningful and impactful. People all around the world seek to buy shoes that are tied to their favorite rappers, basketball players, celebrities, or creative designers.

Sneakers now have more purpose than ever. They support charities, raise awareness for marginalized communities, tell untold or misheard stories, and often bring out the best in humanity when brands and consumers come together for a common goal.

The art of sneakers has evolved because of the rise new concepts constantly being introduced. Sneakers bring to consumers today than just the physical aspect; enthusiasts cherish particular pairs for countless reasons. For example, they might have a personal story about how they acquired the shoes or they have exciting and unforgettable memories/experiences while wearing a particular pair.

More individuals are collaborating with major sneaker brands; the rise of independent labels has been more than noticeable as of the recent past as well. Many designers showcase their creative abilities through the use of sneakers- a universal piece of apparel that almost everyone in the world can relate to in some way one or another.

Art of Sneakers- Creative Touches

Creative designers have been improving and pushing fashion boundaries for centuries. The subcultures under the enormous fashion umbrella seem to be ever-evolving. New alternatives pop up every so often, stemming from other subcultures or completely paving a new and uncharted territory.

Sneakers are a particular sector of fashion that has seen a metric rise over the past fifty plus years. People used to look at shoes as just shoes (some still do), but now more individuals realize sneakers are a form of art. There are designers who specialize in creating their own sneakers and/or reconstructing existing pairs using an abstract and unique techniques.

Designers such as Tinker Hatfield, Peter Moore, Bruce Kilgore, and Eric Avar have created some of the most recognizable sneaker silhouettes in recent history. Independent creatives like Virgil Abloh (RIP legend), Ronnie Fieg, Salehe Bembury, Joe Freshgoods, and Don C have utilized their creativity throughout the sneaker industry.

Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and Asics collaborated with these artists and countless others to reach a much wider audience than they would have by as separates entities unwilling to team up.

In today’s age, the world of customs has blown up dramatically. It is easier (and harder) than ever to create a pair of custom sneakers. The art of sneakers is always subjective. One pair of customs may be considered trash to some and grails to others. Creatives such as The Shoe Surgeon, Mache, and Devlin Carter (founder of Sia Collective) have all influenced enthusiasts through numerous aspects.

Some individuals flock towards customs or independent labels. Others stick to the household names. Every sneaker enthusiast is appreciating art whether they realize it or not. The art of sneakers will forever be influential towards millions around the world.

How to Start a (Sneaker) Blog

Owning a sneaker blog or a website in general seems cool and glamorous on the outside. The things people don’t see, such as the countless mistakes and start overs, show the true reality of running a functioning site.

Most people who start blogs enjoy writing and don’t view it as a chore. If someone doesn’t like to write at all, it might make sense to figure out an outlet that is less writing intensive.

Blogs are rarely overnight successes. An individual must be prepared for years without any substantial rewards.

Foundation of a Blog

Nothing worthwhile will last without a strong foundation. It is important to take the time to think and plan before diving into a short-term or long-term project of a sneaker blog or any focus of your liking.

First, an individual must decide what type of blog and topics the site will cover. Find a niche but nothing too obscure. Do market research even if you consider yourself an expert. There is always information you know you don’t know and details that you have no idea about as well. An open mind and a humble demeanor both go a long way in any sort of journey especially when starting a sneaker blog.

Next, continue to do market and blog specific research before finding your target audience. Even if you have a few ideal viewers, it is better to have some compared to none at all. Conduct initial research on possible domains and hosting sites to get a jumpstart on your sneaker blog’s formation.

A unique logo is one of the finishing touches to a strong foundation. Although it is essential for branding, one should not spend too much time in forming a logo. Branding brings people to your page or site, the content and attitude keeps them coming back. Too much time on a logo takes valuable time away from building a strong foundation.

Before you start creating your website, it is necessary to find your why and what separates you from competitors. There are countless sites on the internet and endless blogs, especially within sneakers. Find key aspects that differentiate your brand which allows for a unique experience. Setting a clear vision and mission statement gives essential insight to remember why you started.

Find Hosting/Domain/Website Builder

Any functioning website needs a domain (the name of your site) and hosting to get off the ground and place in search engine rankings. There are numerous hosting providers and places to buy domains. As long as a provider has good reviews, it should be more than capable of starting your very own blog website.

Website builders vary by pricing, function, accessibility, user interface, and overall capabilities. Research is key during this particular step. Nobody wants to start with one website builder and have to start over for various reasons. Try to limit your options to 3 or 4 platforms/builders before further narrowing your choices. Watch YouTube videos, try demos, read countless articles, and do whatever it takes to find the best website builder for you.

Blog- a site of never ending writing

Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, Shopify (better suited for e-commerce), and GoDaddy are all viable options for a solid website builder. The one you choose will impact your sneaker blog in the short-term and the long run alike. DO NOT go into this vital step blindly. Research is always key especially when starting a new blog using a new/unfamiliar platform.

Implementation and Sneaker Blog Building

Now is the time to put everything together. Too much overthinking leads to wasted time that could be spent doing something. In early stages, your work probably won’t be that good and in some cases it may repel readers. Nobody starts off great at anything, even the “naturals.” The act of doing is most of the battle in the beginning of any new venture. Just start and learn from your experience (mostly mistakes in the beginning).

Research and planning go a long way in a new blog journey. Most people who don’t quit after a few months will start to learn more about things they didn’t know. Results may or may not come as soon or as much as you would like. The reality is that the individuals who have stuck around the longest are almost always some of the most successful in many regards. Quitting kills more talent and potential than failure ever will.

Over time, you will figure out what you are good at and what you can improve upon or outsource. Maintaining and creating content can be a lot for one person; sometimes other people with expertise can take a load off your shoulders. Be cautious of who you work with directly or indirectly- your blog/site is still a reflection of you, regardless if others contributed in some way.

Be consistent once you officially release your sneaker (or any other type of) blog. Your work is not done after you get the site up and running. In fact, the work has just started. Creating and launching your blog is the basic training compared the real world reality that throws curveballs (which no type of training can ever prepare you for).

Once you have started your blog journey, there is no turning back. Only quitting or sticking it out for the long run. No website is meant to live forever, but why quit before you even give yours a chance?

Rotations: The Art of Selective Kicks

Any sneaker lover knows how rotations change drastically over time. Five years ago it might have been all Jordans and now it is a combo of numerous labels. Taste and style morphs over time to better reflect our moods/personalities/interests/etc.

Rotations are essential for all occasions especially vacations, business trips, or any type of travel. Having a curated selection makes picking a fresh pair so much more efficient and almost effortless.

For people who own multiples pairs of sneakers anywhere from twenty to triple digits know the feeling of wearing the same shoes pretty often. While it is impossible to wear more than one pair at a time, rotations provide much needed structure and organization.

Bringing Out the Best

Keeping a few pairs of sneakers in a select group often allows an enthusiast to showcase their favorite and/or best shoes. Curating sneakers is an art that comes with experience and mistakes. Creating a unique selection requires time and effort than cannot be replicated by an automated system. The term “best sneaker” is entirely subjective. Nothing can make sneakers of fashion objective for all.

Personal choice makes rotations unique and meaningful.

The best kicks are typically reserved for good weather days, special occasions, or even a day to feel better about yourself. Everyone has their favorite pairs that make them feel more confident than usual. At the same time, wearing these sneakers often leads to someone being overly cautious for both justified and absurd reasons. The paradox of wearing one’s best sneakers leads to these particular pairs being put aside for unique reasons, occasions, milestones, etc.

Curating Rotations

The art of rotations comes through high attention to detail and understanding simple rules. Nobody can ever create a perfect rotation. However, rotations are meant to be individualized and therefore perfectly imperfect.

When someone is starting to form a solid rotation, a few questions must be answered. One of the first questions that arises- what purpose does this rotation serve? Will the sneakers be used for miles of walking daily? Or will they be around countless people and prone to getting stepped on?

Every answer leads to a better idea of what rotations should look like on a case by case basis. Another question to answer is what will be worn with the sneakers? The right clothes can make or break an extraordinary pair of shoes. It is essential to wear shoes that pair well with clothing; gym shoes do not always go well with streetwear, some sneakers look better with pants or shorts, and colorways may not mesh well with many color palettes. The possibilities for pairing sneakers with an outfit is endless; sneaker lovers must think about the whole fit while putting a rotation together.

Travel is another important factor that must be considered during the curation of rotations. Nobody who likes pain will pack a pair of sneakers that are very uncomfortable to walk and/or stand around in all day. Even though they aren’t sneakers, other footwear like flip flops/sandals or boots are required for the destination’s rotation. One must be adaptable and have shoes that can serve singular purposes as well as pairs that can be multifunctional.

Colorway and Material Combos

Sometimes it makes sense to stick to a particular color palette; other times, it might be more ideal to get a wide variety of colors in a rotation. Colorways often separate the exceptional rotations from the mediocre. Having too much of the sam exact color serves no purpose. A rotation is meant to be unique and exciting. Too much of one thing is bland and does not add much substance to a specific look.

Materials are another essential aspect of a healthy rotation. Depending on the weather, the materials of sneakers must be carefully picked before creating a rotation. Nobody wants to be worried about their shoes 24/7 when they are traveling and trying to have a good time. By taking a few extra minutes to consider the materials, rotations can become effortless when the days to wear the chosen pairs comes around. All you have to do is put on the fresh kicks and feel confident about yourself.

Rotations- Ultra Boost

Both colorways and materials can make or break a pair of sneakers. Tons of sneakers have dope concepts and interesting stories attached to them. However, the materials and colorways contribute immensely to the execution of sneakers. Certain sneakers are unique from others for countless reasons; the best separate themselves from the pack with exquisite execution and high detailing that cannot be found on every sneaker.
